Boat Building: Day 8

We're reaching the home stretch here at the shop!

Yesterday we sanded the outside of the boat, shaped paddles, finished seats, created "baby" thwarts (see photos!), and put on the outside gunwales. With each step, it gets stronger and more beautiful. We can't wait to hit the water.

Stay tuned for pictures of our real life, really shiny, really finished canoe!

Finishing the caning process

Looks like it'll hold!

All that's left is to create the permanent pegs

(Still) sick of sanding
Drilling and screwing in the gunwales
Smoothing out the paddles

Our classy deck plate! Plus, a "baby" thwart which we hope will help with carries.

Feast your eyes on that!

  1. Been following your progress. I through-paddled in 2011. Your canoe is AMAZING! If you've done as much research about the trail as you have about building your own vessel, you should be fine. But I do cringe to think of you paddling it on some of the bonier rivers in particular, the Saranac between Kent Falls and Plattsburg, the lower part of the Nulhegan after Wenlock Crossing, the S. Br. of the Dead (between Rangeley and Stratton, if there even will be enough water in it later this summer) and Little Spencer Stream--which will probably end up mostly being tracking upstream. Be sure to stop in at St. Regis in Saranac Lake and Ecopelagicon in Rangeley for river reports. Otherwise--may the winds be always to your backs. Am looking forward to reading about your travels too. It's a fantastic journey. Have a great trip!
