Boat Building: Day 2

Yesterday we woke up to a heavy rain, the perfect weather to put in a full day at the shop (and the perfect weather to fill all those rivers!) After a late start, we headed out and began to pull staples, scrape off wood glue, and sand, sand, sand. The process of buffing up our beautiful boat took most of the morning and afternoon. We were finally ready to lay the fiberglass cloth and epoxy. But, as we lifted our fragile boat - so close to giving it strength with the fiberglass! - it fell and developed a small crack.

Instead of throwing in the towel for the night, we tried to solve the setback by putting a mixture of epoxy and sawdust into the crack and using straps to pull it closed. We threw a heat lamp on top and took a much needed wine and dinner break. When we came back, the epoxy was mostly hardened. We decided to put a layer of 4 ounce fiberglass cloth on the bottom of the boat and seal the rest with epoxy.

This weekend we'll be joined by some helpers, Seth Quarrier and part of the Miller gang. We can't wait for the extra hands and good company!

Here are some more photos:

Can you tell which one of us has
the sander with a vacuum?

All sanded, ain't she perty?

Sad day, we had to quickly rush
her into the operating room

Fiberglass all laid out

Voila!

  1. I am so amazed with this boat. She looks so beautiful. I have no doubt that the crack was more than healed. Worst case scenario you can give it to me and I will help make a new one. ;)
